Anna Manuelli: A Journey Through Storytelling and Strength

Anna Manuelli is an actress whose passion for storytelling runs deep. From her early fascination with film to her rigorous training and diverse roles, she has carved a path in the industry with authenticity and dedication. Best known for her role as Alessia Biondi in SAS Rogue Heroes, Manuelli brings intensity and emotional depth to every performance. In this interview, she reflects on her artistic journey, the challenges of her most demanding roles, and the power of storytelling.

Finding a Passion for Acting

For Manuelli, acting was an instinctive passion from childhood. «Ever since I was a child, I have always been fascinated by films and the possibility of completely immersing myself in stories far away from me,» she shares. This curiosity turned into something deeper when she started performing in theatre as a teenager. «I realized that it wasn’t just curiosity—I really fell in love with it.»

Her early training in Florence laid the foundation for her career, but it was her time at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome that truly shaped her craft. «Starting with theatre was essential for me; that’s where everything started,» she explains. «During my years of study at the Centro Sperimentale, I had the chance to deepen and explore so much more. Drama school was fundamental for me—not just for my growth as an actress, but also on a human level.»

When asked about the actors and filmmakers who have inspired her, Manuelli struggles to pick just a few. «There are so many—it’s hard to choose,» she admits. «For actors, definitely Anna Magnani, Cillian Murphy, Cate Blanchett… but there are many others. As for directors, Paul Thomas Anderson comes to mind. Tim Mielants as well—I recently saw Small Things Like These and was really impressed. It was moving, inspiring, full of poetry.»

The Art of Transformation

When preparing for a role, Manuelli approaches each character with great care and depth. «The first thing I always do is go as deep as possible into the history of the characters and the circumstances in which they find themselves,» she explains. «I imagine who they are, their habits, and their main characteristics. A fundamental step for me is understanding what they want and what they fear at that moment in their life.»

She doesn’t strictly adhere to a single acting method, instead combining elements that resonate with her. «I don’t think I follow a defined method—I’ve combined elements of different techniques that I felt worked best for me over the years,» she says. «Certainly, there’s a bit of Stanislavski and Meisner. The most important thing for me is being clear about the character’s aim.»

One of her most challenging roles to date was Isa in the Sky production Gangs of Milan. «She is a very complex character who suffers from schizophrenia,» Manuelli reveals. «It was an extremely intense and interesting experience to play her. The depth of her struggle and her desire for redemption and freedom taught me a lot.»

Stepping Into History: SAS Rogue Heroes

Manuelli’s role as Alessia Biondi in SAS Rogue Heroes gave her the opportunity to bring a significant historical figure to life. «Shooting SAS Rogue Heroes was an amazing experience,» she says. «We had a lot of fun, and the team was wonderful. Alessia was a fascinating character—a woman who put everything she had on the line to fight for freedom. I’m so glad I had the chance to play her.»

The series, which explores the origins of the Special Air Service (SAS) during World War II, required a deep understanding of the historical period. «I was already quite familiar with the historical context of World War II, but it was fascinating to delve even deeper with readings and research—especially into the stories of the Partisans and the Resistance,» she says. «I was also greatly helped by the direct accounts of my grandparents, who experienced those events firsthand.»

Working on set was both inspiring and rewarding. «The cast and crew were incredible,» Manuelli recalls. «We really had a lot of fun together. There were so many memorable moments, but if I had to pick one, I’d say the sea swims in Croatia after coming back tired from set.»

Alessia’s presence in the show is significant, highlighting the role of women in the resistance. «I think it’s interesting to see Alessia fighting in the midst of this group of soldiers with such courage and determination,» she says. «She is willing to sacrifice everything to fight against injustice. Along with the character of Eve, played by Sofia, she represents the many women who fought against Nazism and Fascism. It’s important and beautiful to tell their stories.»

As for what’s next in SAS Rogue Heroes Season 2, Manuelli teases plenty of action and emotional depth. «The second season is full of energy, twists, and insights into the characters. It’s very engaging and full of beautiful performances,» she says. «Alessia and the Italian Resistance fight alongside the SAS, facing all the events that lead to the liberation of Italy from the Nazis.»

Building Chemistry and Exploring New Roles

Whether in SAS Rogue Heroes, Finally Dawn, or Gangs of Milan, Manuelli understands the importance of on-screen chemistry. «I approach it by sharing our visions of the characters—looking for common points and common goals regarding the story we’re telling together,» she explains.

When asked if there’s a character she relates to the most, she finds it difficult to choose. «By going deep into their internal dynamics, fears, and hopes, I can’t help but grow fond of each of them in the end,» she says. «But I’m definitely very attached to Alessia. I share her values, and I admire her courage.»

Looking ahead, she remains open to all kinds of roles. «I don’t know if there’s a specific character or genre I want to explore,» she says. «What I care most about is the story being told. If it’s an interesting and meaningful story, I’m up for any genre and any character.»

For aspiring actors, Manuelli offers this advice: «I think it’s very important to work hard, always try your best, and not give up,» she says. «But also, learn to wait and be patient.»

With her unwavering dedication to storytelling, Anna Manuelli continues to leave her mark on stage and screen, bringing depth and authenticity to every role she plays.
